During lunch today, I happened to be out and about and I came across a young girl, she was probably in her early 20's and she was sitting with a sign that said "Homeless, need lunch and work clothes for a job". And this was in a busy area in South Lake Union, nice area. It was cold out today and she was just sitting there, she wasn't making eye contact with anyone, she kept her head down trying to read something. For a few minutes, I observed the reaction of people passing by, most looked with a sympathetic look, a couple people walked over and handed some money. Most people didn't even notice her as they hurried about their busy day.
I had this overwhelming feeling that I need to say something to her, help her in some sort of way. I walked over to her and I spoke and I asked her would she like to have some lunch, and when she looked up she had beautiful blue eyes and she smiled and she eagerly said, Yes I would really like that, I asked her what she would like, she Tandoori Chicken and Rice sounds good but I'll take anything. I told her I would be right back. And luckily, Whole Foods has a cool selection of homemade foods ready to go, so I found Tandoori Chicken, Rice, Samosas, Vegetables for her. I got her a drink and a cookie and I took it out to her and just seeing the look on her face was something. She said thank you, you are so sweet. I asked her name and she told me Devan and I told her my name and she politely shook hands with me. She told me she didn't have a home, she said she was looking for a job and that she had worked before at a coffee shop as a Barrista. She said she had recently had two interviews and that she might have a job soon but she said I need some decent clothes to wear to work. I asked her was she at this location everyday, she said she goes to different places. I told her, if you come back here to this same spot on Monday, I will help you get some work clothes. And I told her to remember that God Loves Her and to not give up, stay strong. I could tell she felt happy that someone acknowledged her and seemed to care.
So my plan, after I get my paycheck, is to give her some money next Monday to help her buy some new clothes. I really want to help her and to show her that there are people who do care. I'm really praying for her that she can get the job and a place to stay and live a life off the streets and full fill her God given purpose in this life.
It's something, because you never know what card life will deal you but you have to be prepared and be ready and willing to help others because you never know you could be in a very difficult situation and need help too. I sometimes think if we all tried to help each other, there would be no homeless people or people without food. It takes us all to make a difference, and it can be done, if we just stop for a moment and not always focus on our own needs but look at helping someone else.
